In Dakota Achuna is “older sister” and Mitana is “younger sister” This piece is meant to represent the bond between sisters. Sisterhood is everything in our culture.
If you’re a woman and your sister has a child you’re called “mamana” which translates into “second mother” If anything happens to your sister their baby is now under your care. It’s such a strong bond which I wanted to represent.
With how sacred we consider our hair only a few are allowed to touch and braid the hair. Besides your mother one of them is your sisters. So in this piece having the two sisters braid each others hair shows the strong trust and love they have in each other.
I picked out more bright and warm colours, and an abstract background, so the focus would be on the two girls. I always enjoy creating and painting hair so this was fun to do.
